When most people think of the Central Florida area, their thoughts turn immediately to the theme parks. Daring roller coaster, classic dark rides, boats of every description and six foot tall mice are just a few of the images for which Central Florida is known. Exotic cars, however, are not.
Some of you may have a passing familiarity with Celebration, FL as the town the Mickey built. Walt Disney’s original plan for Epcot, then EPCOT Center, was a utopian city center. Following Walt’s death, however, the project was scrapped and Epcot morphed into the futuristic World’s Fair that it is today. In the 1990s, however, Disney decided to go forward with the idea of building a technologically advanced city, and Celebration was born.
Celebration is no longer owned by Disney, but it retains the ideals of a utopian, planned small town. Last week, the town hosted its fifth annual Exotic Car Festival. For a long, luxurious weekend, the streets of Celebration were overrun with Maseratis, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and other beautiful and exotic automobiles. A highlight of the collection was a 1929 duPont LeMans Speedster.
The Lakeland Ledger (my hometown newspaper!) was on hand to cover all the details. The event brought together exotic car fanatics from across the country to admire each other’s vehicles and enjoy the festivities. Of course, plenty of fans who do not own exotic cars also turned up, many of them asking detailed questions of those who had vehicles on display.
Plenty of celebrities such as Christopher Lloyd were on hand as hosts, and did a great job of circulating through the crowd. The event ended on Sunday afternoon with an honorary police-escorted road rally, giving the owners a chance to show off their cars on the public streets.
